Core Values

Being a great Hapkido student

There are many attributes and attitudes that an ASD Hapkido student learns in their course, however we believe that there are some basics that students need to bring with them to start on their journey. They are easy but fundamental to student success. Here they are:

Commitment to consistent class attendance

We recommend training at least twice a week. Make classes and yourself a priority.

A smile and some positive energy

All of our instructors spend much time, energy and though preparing classes. No instructor deserves a blank face or frown. No training partner wants to train with a dull person. Train yourself to leave your worries at the dojang door, complete your breathing exercises and put a bit of excitement in your body. Our instructors conduct high energy classes that get the positive juices flowing for everyone. As an educational organisation, we believe in the eastern philosophy that you, the student, need to bring something to the lesson. You are as responsible for your learning as much as the instructor. It’s all part of martial arts training.

Learner for life attitude

At ASD Academy we hold the firm belief that everyone is a life learner. Only the student that can empty their glass time and time again will continue to learn for a life time. We believe that our black belts need to keep a white belt attitude of “there is so much to learn”. Everyone can learn something from another person if they keep an open attitude.

Being a supportive Hapkido parent

Children require the ongoing support of their parents to be great Hapkido students. Parents need to ensure:

  • students get to class on time
  • students are able to attend classes twice a week

Parents also need to be their children’s number one supporter. Things a parent can do to ensure their children continue to enjoy Hapkido are:

  • stay up to date with what is happening in the school
  • ask your child what they enjoyed the most about class
  • watch a class each week and note how you think your child has improved in class. Give them praise.
  • help them learn to be a person who “sticks at” things when the going get tough

Testimonials

"Our family has been part of the ASD family for over seven years. During that time Travis and Liz Faure have introduced a comprehensive program that not only develops us as martial artists, but also focuses on personal health and fitness, and enhanced life skills. The ASD program for juniors is outstanding, with both our boys clearly demonstrating improved decision making, confidence, empathy and physical skills; all directly attributable to the ASD influence.

We are delighted with the positive changes ASD has delivered into our lives – many of which were totally unexpected – and unreservedly recommend ASD to people of all ages seeking challenge, balance and self-improvement in a friendly, safe, and professional environment."

Don, Sarah, Zac and Angus

"We love that the program is run by professional people who live their lives by the martial arts principals and are such strong role models to our children. The program provides not just skills, but structure, values and FUN. There is a flexible program to suit the work/home balance juggle. We first tried Hapkido to boost the “body confidence” of our seven year old.

He now carries himself confidently and has a much improved self image. He is fit and learning valuable skills. Not only that, we were unable to keep our 3 year old off the mat and he is also confidently progressing through the Bunyips program. Not to be left out, Mum and Dad join in the Parent ‘n Kids classes, making it a true family activity.Strengths: feel part of the Hapkido (ASD) family, modelling of good values, well organised, super instructors."

Linda

"Having had experience in martial arts in the past, I wanted to find a class which blended useful self defence, traditional martial arts and exercise. I attempted a few other martial arts schools around Canberra, finding most lacked in one of these areas (less useful self defence, no support for the traditional aspects or no fitness component). When I found ASD, I was very impressed.

The program introduces students with basic self defence skills (elbows, knees etc.) and progresses into the complex and more advanced martial arts skills (wrist locks, complex kicks etc.). This manner allows a beginner student to gain necessary skills to defend themselves right away and then enhance their capability with sophisticated skills as they progress. Guest instructors, who are masters of other disciplines, provide added comprehension of other skills (e.g. knife fighting). The fitness component of the class, while challenging, is a tough workout, keeping students fit, healthy and strong. I recommend ASD anyone interested in self defence, traditional martial arts or building up their fitness.'"

Adults Hapkido

Hapkido - What is it?

Hapkido is often called the “complete” martial arts for its comprehensive armoury of defensive tactics. Hapkido is a Mixed Martial Art (MMA) with its powerful strikes, kicks, locks, throws and takedowns, pressure points and self defence principles ensure that it is indeed complete.

In the most comprehensive tome on Hapkido Marc Tedeschi says “ Most martial arts place an emphasis on two or three technique areas. Hapkido is somewhat unique in that it attempts to integrate seven areas: striking, avoiding and blocking, holding, throwing, internal techniques (meditation, breathing, internal energy development) and healing. The first six area are emphasized equally during formal training. The seventh area healing is usually part of master level training…….”

However, Hapkido draws on hundreds of years of martial arts practise and knowledge and ancient knowledge of proper breathing techniques, using the body’s energy sources and pressure points are all key ingredients of this martial art.

If you are a young gun and want to push yourself hard you will find training partners abound. If you are a bit older and want a lifelong passion you will also find yourself among friends. Our curriculum and matting ensure age is no limit. Adults train all year round. We train 7 days a week. At ASD we build and develop your fitness level. No fitness level is required to commence in our programs.  Beginners most welcome!

Teens: 13 –17 year olds

Our Teens use the same technique syllabus as our adults, however the lessons designated for their program are high energy, quick moving and fun. Games and challenges are still included yet the challenge of the adult syllabus and the chance to sometimes train with the adults provide a recognition of growth. Teens are encouraged to be leaders and take on “Big Brother/Sister” roles and assist our Hapkido Kids in a friendly manner. Teens learn many valueable life skills that will be a foundation for the rest of their life. Teens train all year round. We train 7 days a week.

Parents ’n’ kids: For the Parents (PnK)

A program that started small but has proven a hit. Parents train at the same time as their child but in a separate session. They follow the same syllabus as the adult program but at their own pace. Not only are parents getting fitter, the kids love having something to share with their parent. Parents 'n' Kids train based on the school term. During the school term we have P'N'K classes 4 days a week.

About Australian Self Defence

Background

Australian Self Defence (ASD) commenced operating in Canberra 2003 teaching adult and children's Hapkido self defence programs. Originally operating in Downer and then in 2008 moving to Mitchell ACT.  ASD is a Martial Arts Centre of Excellence and over the past 12 years has broaden the martial arts they offer to students to include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) a ground based self defence system, Floro Fighting Systems (FFS) focussed on edged and blunt weapons awareness, specialised self defence courses for children (Action Kids), teens (Urban Survival), adults (Ladies Self Defence and FAST Defence) and tailored training for various organisations. ASD also has a positive interest in developing combatively fit individuals and classes focus on fitness using martial drills to achieve these fitness goals. ASD has built a culture of respect, nurturing and progressive learning across a wide array of martial disciplines. Students are exposed to and can focus on various martial arts gaining the benfits of each martial art and develop an all round appreciation of martial arts ultimately becoming a more complete martial artist.

ASD is a member of the Australian Jujitsu Federation which is a Government recognised martial arts peak body. ASD follows their code of practice and governing rules. ASD is officially approved as a centre for the teaching and practice of Korean Martial Arts as authorised by Han Min Jok Hapkido Association and World KIDO Federation. ASD has strong links with various Hapkido Masters including Master Fari Salievski (Hapkido 7th degree Black Belt) of KMA.  ASD is also an official Brazilian Jiujitsu Will-Machado School under Professor John Will (BJJ 5th Degree Black Belt), and is an official Floro Fighting System school under Mr Ray Floro.

Mission

Our mission is to facilitate positive change and self development in our student’s lives; to help them be the best that they can be.
Martial arts are unique in their ability to address the improvement of our physical, mental and spiritual being. We strive to provide a superior self defence program and school that produces upstanding and contributing community members who value their bodies, minds and spirits and encourage others to do the same.

Creed

  1. I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that would impair my mental growth or physical health.
  2. I intend to develop self -discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
  3. I intend to use the skills I learn in class constructively and defensively to help myself and my fellow man, and never be abusive or offensive.

The ultimate aim of martial arts study is not victory or defeat but in the perfection of the characters of its participants.

What you get from us

ASD Academy is the premier martial arts school in Canberra . Our courses and curriculum are second to none. We provide you with courses, instructors and the tools to improve yourself, physically and mentally. Physically, the self defence foundation of the course is pre-eminent, practical and useful. Mentally, the personal safety and life principles programs provide you with valuable life skills.

Children will improve their behaviour at home and learn how to focus and concentrate at school better. They will develop better social skills and learn how to keep safe through our ASD Life Principles and ASD Personal Safety Program.

Teens will be provided with clean living healthy role models. They gain successful mentors, learn life skills and strategies to help them make the right choices in today’s complex world. Teens learn ways to walk away when possible but protect themselves when needed.

Adults will find a personal haven, where they can concentrate on themselves for a time each day. Young adults will find the physical rush of endorphins a pull while older adults will enjoy a stronger body and feel healthier. Adults will have a focus and clarity of vision that will help them to succeed in other areas of life.

Sounds too pie in the sky? Not really. Think about it. If you were to add into your day a bit of exercise, proper breathing, success in learning something useful and new, some time just for you with instructors and training partners who want you to succeed – then you know that you would feel better about yourself straight away. Combine that with quality supporting curricula, facilities and literature, then you know it is achievable.
